For quite a while now, my customers have been asking me how they should approach their digital marketing and if I could help them. As this wasn't part of my services, I kept referring them to digital marketing agencies. But, unfortunately, what I kept hearing back from them was a great deal of disappointment around the results these agencies delivered.

This feedback got me thinking about my services and how I could help my clients get better results from their digital marketing.

What I needed to know was what my clients were interested in from my current services. So I took a look at my website's Google Analytics to see which pages people had been visiting. This data would give me some perspective around what people wanted from my current services; then, I  looked at the results of my digital marketing to see whether those results matched. And they did.

It turns out one of my services, branding, no longer interested my clients. They weren't responding to any of my marketing or visiting this page of my website. So, to be sure, I started doing a great deal of research, and the further I dug into this, the more I realised it was true.

I couldn't quite wrap my head around how a business could successfully market itself without a brand strategy. Oh, sure, branding is still a thing for large corporations, but entrepreneurs were overlooking it and getting disastrous results from their digital marketing.

Let me give you an example so you can see how they are connected. One of my clients asked me to create their logo but couldn't see the point of developing a brand strategy. No matter how much I stressed how important it was to their future marketing, they just wouldn't budge.

That decision ended up costing them $10,000. You see, the client went straight from me to a digital marketing agency and booked a series of online ads to promote their business. But, unfortunately, they hadn't done any research and didn't know their market, their customer's needs and didn't have a compelling message. So, it was no surprise when I learnt their campaign delivered zero results.

Now here's the problem, all that research used to happen when you developed a brand strategy. So the question for me became if business owners weren't interested in creating a brand strategy, what the heck did they think they needed?

It took a lot more research and talking with many entrepreneurs to figure out it was a digital strategy.

A digital strategy has all the deliverables of a brand strategy, except its focus is solely on digital marketing.

A digital strategy ensures your marketing is aligned with your business goals and optimises your results. It also gives you insights into your business through solid research into your market and customer's needs. Finally, it will drive your digital marketing and be the power behind how effective it is.

Digital marketing has become an essential part of every business's marketing mix, including my own. If we want to reach our customers, grow our business and keep track of our results, we all need a digital strategy.

So I started looking for a solution. Because once I knew this, I knew I needed to have a digital strategy to make sense of my digital marketing results. But I couldn't find a course that would show me what I needed to know.
